• How do you handle catch-all email domains when you can’t confirm whether a specific mailbox exists, and what does that mean for its confidence score?

  Short version: we tell you it’s a catch-all, and we don’t pretend to know more than that.

  A catch-all domain is configured to accept mail at any address, so the server gives the same answer whether the mailbox is real or invented. There is no mailbox-level yes or no to be had. Any tool that hands you a clean “valid” on a catch-all address is guessing, and when it’s wrong the bounce lands on your sending reputation, not theirs.

  So we report it as its own result instead of folding it into valid or invalid. You get Catch-All: Yes sitting next to the rest of the evidence: whether the domain has MX records, whether the mail server accepted a connection, whether it’s a role account like info@ or billing@, and whether it’s a known spam trap.

  The confidence score follows the same logic. It reflects what we actually confirmed, which here is domain-level — the domain exists, it has a working mail server, it accepts mail. A catch-all lands in the middle of the range, not up with an address we could confirm. That gap is the point.

  There’s also a third state. When our provider can’t determine the mailbox at all, we return UNKNOWN rather than bucketing it by score. On a real list that’s usually around 10% of rows. We would rather tell you we don’t know than call a live address dead — on a client or patient list, the expensive mistake is the one where a real person never gets contacted.

  Practically, what I’d do with a catch-all: send to it if you already have a relationship with the person, and don’t build a cold campaign on a list that’s mostly catch-all domains. Treat it as “probably fine, not verified,” because that’s what it is.
