About Github
By James Andrews · Founder of SaaS Browser, 15+ years building SaaS · Updated November 3, 2026
GitHub is a cloud platform for hosting Git repositories and collaborating on software. Developers use it to store code, review changes through pull requests, track issues and automate builds and releases. For SaaS companies it is where the product's source code, open-source libraries, SDKs and developer documentation often live, which is why links to it turn up on so many marketing sites.
We currently detect Github on 60,602 published SaaS products, a footprint that makes it one of the most common Development Tools references in our database.
3,285 SaaS products linking to Github were added to SaaS Browser in the last 30 days, 25,609 so far in 2026, and 27,115 over the last 12 months.
GitHub launched in 2008, built on Git, the version control system Linus Torvalds created in 2005. Microsoft acquired the company in 2018 and has run it as a subsidiary since. Over the years GitHub added GitHub Pages for static sites, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, Codespaces for cloud development environments and GitHub Copilot, its AI coding assistant. In August 2025 CEO Thomas Dohmke announced he would step down, and GitHub began moving closer to Microsoft's CoreAI organization.
SaaS companies link to GitHub for several reasons: to show an open-source core, to publish client libraries and API examples, to point developers at issue trackers and changelogs, or to signal that the team ships in public. A plan with unlimited public and private repositories is free, and paid Team and Enterprise tiers are priced per user per month, so the platform is cheap to adopt but sticky once CI pipelines, issues and permissions are built around it. The usual alternatives are GitLab and Bitbucket, and some teams self-host Gitea or Forgejo.
A GitHub link on a SaaS homepage most often means the company has a developer audience, an open-source component or a public API with SDKs. It does not prove the product is open source, and it does not show that the company hosts its private code there. Treat it as a hint about developer orientation, not as a measure of engineering maturity.
AI-powered Virtual Avatars & Digital Assistants is where Github shows up most, making up 2% of the SaaS products we see linking to it. After that come AI-powered Virtual Avatars & Digital Assistants, Workflow Automation & RPA, AutoML Platforms, AI Agent Builders and AI-powered Resume Screening Tools, which fits a platform whose audience is people who build things.
You can see the pattern in established names such as Cloudflare, GitHub and UNPKG, while Trackadobe, Minbar Caption and Clanomy are among the newest products we have found referencing it.
Many of these products let customers start on their own: 39% are product-led, against 25% that sell through demos or sales conversations. Typical pricing among them runs $10 to $54 a month, and 57% are flagged as using AI.
Geography is fairly concentrated: United States accounts for 18% of SaaS products referencing Github, with United States, United Kingdom, and India also well represented.
How we detect it: we scan each SaaS homepage's HTML for any reference to github.com, such as a link to a repository, an organization page, a badge or a script hosted there. We do not read HTTP headers for this technology, and a match shows a mention of GitHub rather than proof that the product's code or hosting runs on it. Counts are refreshed with every scan; this page reflects November 2026.
