If a server update or security patch breaks a live WordPress site, can I roll back the change and restore the site without restoring the entire server?

Yes. On Rabbitflare you can roll back a single WordPress site without restoring the whole server. The other sites on the same server aren't touched.
Restoring one site
Turn on site backups on the site's Backups tab. Backups run daily or weekly at a time you choose, and you can keep up to 60 of them. They're stored away from the server, either in Rabbitflare Backup or in your own Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, Backblaze B2, Cloudflare R2 or SFTP storage. You can also take one by hand just before an update.
If something breaks, pick a backup and choose what to put back:
- Everything: the site's files and database, as they were.
- Files only: WordPress, plugins, themes and uploads go back. The database (posts, orders, users) stays as it is now.
- Database only: posts, pages, settings, users and orders go back. The files stay as they are now.
After a bad update, "Files only" is usually the right choice. The code goes back, and any orders or posts made since the backup are kept. Before restoring, the panel first saves the site as it is now (this option is ticked by default), so you can undo the restore itself if needed. Visitors only see a short maintenance notice while the database is being replaced.
Testing updates first (free)
Every site can have a free staging copy. Run updates there, and when everything works, push them to the live site. A "Code" push leaves the live site's orders and posts alone. Each push keeps a restore point for 7 days, so "Undo push" puts the live site back in one click. If the live site doesn't load right after a push, it's put back automatically.
About server security patches
The server installs security fixes for its software automatically every day. These are fixes to the versions you already have, not upgrades to new ones (PHP 8.3 stays PHP 8.3), so they rarely change how a site behaves. Server software like PHP is shared by all the sites on a server, so a patch applies to the whole server and isn't rolled back for one site. If a patch ever clashes with a plugin or theme on one of your sites, open a support ticket from the panel and we'll look at it with you, on that site alone.
Whole-server snapshots, as a last resort
On DigitalOcean, Vultr and Hetzner servers you also get automatic whole-server backups, and you can take a snapshot before a big change. Restoring one rolls back every site on that server, so it's only for emergencies. The per-site restore above is the normal way.
Cost: backups to your own storage cost nothing extra. Rabbitflare Backup is $2 a month per site plus storage. Staging is free on every plan.
