• How do your keyword traffic and difficulty scores account for differences between countries, stores, and app categories?

  Every score is calculated for one specific market. A keyword’s traffic and difficulty are measured separately for each combination of store (App Store or Google Play), country and language. “Fitness tracker” in the US App Store and in German Google Play are treated as two different keywords, each with its own scores and history.

  The data comes from that market. We look at the search results, search suggestions and top charts of the selected store in the selected country. The scores reflect how people in that country actually search and which apps they actually see.

  Each store gets its own model. Apple and Google share different information, so we score each store with signals suited to what it exposes:

  App Store: We use Apple’s own search popularity data from Apple Ads. It’s reported per country and per category, so you can see how popular a keyword is overall and within the categories where people search for it. We combine this with our own analysis of the apps that rank for the keyword.

  Google Play: Google doesn’t publish search popularity, so traffic is estimated from store signals. These include search suggestions and how the top-ranking apps do in their category’s top charts in that country.

  Category is reflected through the competition. Difficulty is based on the apps that rank for the keyword: how strong, established, well rated and closely matched to the keyword they are. A keyword dominated by strong apps in a crowded category scores as harder than one with weaker or less relevant results.

  The scores are best for comparing keywords within the same market. Apple’s popularity values and our estimates are relative scales, not absolute search counts. On the App Store, download estimates are also adjusted for the size of each country’s market
