How Hileon Budget Tracker got started

I’ve always been kind of interested in personal finance and planning, but then I noticed that a lot of people around me - including professionals, families, and small business owners - were handling important money decisions with scattered notes, spreadsheets, and just plain memory. The turning point was when I realized how hard it was for them to get a clear view of their income, expenses, savings goals, and also the business numbers all in one place. Like, yeah, there were tools out there, but many were too pricey, or too complicated, or they only helped with one piece of the whole puzzle. I kept thinking, why can’t someone have a single app that does daily spending tracking, supports business management, helps monitor projects, and then also shows useful financial insights without juggling everything? That frustration basically became the whole basis for Hileon Budget Tracker. I cherish every experience that led me to this path.

Growing Hileon Budget Tracker: what worked and what didn't

One tactic that worked kinda surprisingly well was staying on track with product-first visual posts, basically showing what Hileon can actually do, like budgeting, invoicing, money insights, and AI-powered tools too. When we showed practical scenarios and how things play out, people seemed to click more and engage, like way more than when we just… talked about the app, without showing the real feature. Organic real use cases are the most authentic way I have really turned a page. One tactic that didn’t really land was posting in a broad way on social media, without a real audience game plan. It did boost visibility at least a bit, but it didn’t bring much meaningful engagement or useful user feedback. It felt like we were shouting in every direction at once. What I took from it is that targeted distribution matters a lot, and showing genuine value beats trying to reach everyone, all at the same time.

What Hileon Budget Tracker customers really think

One of the most common requests has been for Hileon to handle more financial stuff in one single place. People would tell me they were kind of jumping between several apps for budgeting, business records, invoices, savings tracking, and financial planning. Instead of treating them as separate problems, I kind of, slowly expanded Hileon’s abilities so they all felt in the same platform, you know. The user input has really shaped what we added, like project tracking, invoicing, receipt scanning, business finance management, cloud backup, and AI-based financial insights. My general method has been to listen closely, spot the recurring patterns, and then put first the features that actually solve normal daily problems, not just adding extra functionality for the sake of it. I really treasure users who are open about the downsides of the app. Criticism is gold in this industry because if you do not know what is not working, it is very perilous.

What most people get wrong about Financial Planning & Budgeting Tools

A lot of people think personal finance is mostly about keeping tabs on expenses or trimming spending here and there, but in my experience, the real headache is getting clarity, plus some confidence when you have to decide things. Most folks don’t only want to know where the money went; they really want to see if they are on the right path for their objectives, building a venture, managing a project, getting ready for later costs, or strengthening their financial stance over time. Honestly, the best financial tools are not the ones stuffed with endless graphs; it’s the ones that guide you to make smarter choices with less stress and less guesswork, even when things feel a bit shaky. The key thing that most users demand is a purely user-friendly experience. Complicated functions and calculations should be made to feel very easy. This is where the bulk of my hours working on this app were spent - improving user experience.

What's next for Hileon Budget Tracker

Over the next 6–12 months, I’m pretty focused on making Hileon into an even more complete financial management platform, honestly. My key priorities are to push AI-powered financial insights further, smooth out automation a bit more, strengthen the business finance features, and enhance how things feel across different devices. I’m also continuing to simplify the whole process so users can manage budgets, projects, invoices, savings goals, and financial planning from one single application, without extra friction. But again, every trajectory I take will be virtually based on user feeling.

Terrence's background

Before building Hileon, I spent more than 8 years in development programmes across Africa and Europe, feet deep in managing projects, budgets, reporting, and data. Over time, that work gave me pretty real, firsthand experience with financial planning, accountability, and those everyday challenges organizations run into when they're handling resources. I also built digital solutions along the way and explored business ideas, but Hileon is the first real, dedicated fintech product I ever went all in on. So I stitched together my programme management background, my tech capability, and my understanding of the small financial frictions people face day to day - to make a tool that helps individuals and small businesses take back control of their finances.

Biggest lesson building Hileon Budget Tracker

Honestly, my biggest mistake was building too many features way before I really stopped and deeply checked what users actually needed most. I kind of got stuck on making this complete financial ecosystem, but early feedback was pretty clear that simplicity and clarity - yeah, they matter almost as much as functionality does. After that, I learned to listen more closely to users, zoom in on the features that solve the immediate problems first and then improve the whole experience through continuous feedback, not just guesses or assumptions. It felt messy at times, but it worked out. Listening to the users is always key to avoid friction.
I would launch earlier with a simpler version, gather user feedback sooner, and prioritize the features users needed most before expanding. This would have saved me valuable time and resources.
